Racing | Formula 1 | 1967 Dutch Grand Prix — Clark Wins the Lotus 49 and Cosworth DFV Debut

At Circuit Zandvoort on 4 June 1967, Team Lotus brought two new Lotus 49s powered by Ford-funded, 3-litre Cosworth DFV V8 engines to a World Championship Grand Prix for the first time.

Graham Hill put the sister car on pole in 1 minute 24.6 seconds. Jim Clark, whose practice running had been limited, qualified eighth in 1 minute 26.8 seconds.

Hill led the opening ten laps before retiring after 11. The contemporary Motor Sport report identifies broken teeth in a camshaft-driving gear; Jack Brabham then led for five laps.

Clark passed Jochen Rindt for second on lap 15, took the lead from Brabham on lap 16, and stayed there through the finish. He completed 90 laps in 2 hours 14 minutes 45.1 seconds.

The official classification placed Brabham second, 23.6 seconds behind, and Denny Hulme third, 25.7 seconds behind. Clark also set the fastest lap on lap 67 in 1 minute 28.080 seconds. Neither the official final classification nor the contemporary report records a penalty or appeal that changed those positions.

The result made the Lotus 49 and Ford-Cosworth DFV combination a winner on its first World Championship appearance. Formula 1’s race-result page identifies Clark’s car as Lotus Ford, while its starting-grid and fastest-lap pages display “Lotus Climax”; the contemporary report resolves the discrepancy by describing both works cars as Lotus 49s with Cosworth 3-litre V8 engines.

The race used Zandvoort’s original permanent course through the dunes: 4.193 kilometres, or 2.605 miles, per lap. That 1948–1971 layout is distinct from the current 4.259-kilometre Grand Prix circuit.
