Racing | Le Mans | 1991 24 Hours — Mazda’s Rotary Victory at Circuit de la Sarthe

On 23 June 1991, the No. 55 Mazdaspeed Mazda 787B crossed the finish line at the Circuit de la Sarthe to win the 59th 24 Hours of Le Mans. Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert and Bertrand Gachot completed 362 laps—about 4,923 kilometres—in chassis 787B-002, giving Mazda the first overall Le Mans victory by a Japanese manufacturer.

The car’s four-rotor R26B engine made the result unique as well as national history. No other rotary-engined car has won the race overall, making the 787B an exceptional branch in Le Mans engineering history.

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s final classification places the No. 55 Mazda first, ahead of the No. 35 and No. 34 Silk Cut Jaguar XJR-12s. The leading Jaguar completed 360 laps and the third-place car 358, while Mazda’s other two entries finished sixth and eighth; the official final order records no penalty or exclusion that changes the podium.

Herbert drove the closing stint, but dehydration and exhaustion sent him to the medical centre instead of the podium. Weidler and Gachot therefore accepted the trophy while their teammate recovered, an unusual conclusion to Mazda’s long campaign for an overall Le Mans victory.

This memory is pinned to the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans, also known as the Circuit de la Sarthe. The 1991–96 configuration measured 13.600 kilometres and used the two Mulsanne Straight chicanes introduced the previous year, combining permanent racing facilities with closed public roads south of Le Mans.
