On 21 May 1950, the grid formed on Boulevard Albert I for the eleventh Monaco Grand Prix, the second round of the new Formula One World Championship and the championship debut of Scuderia Ferrari.
Juan Manuel Fangio placed the number 34 Alfa Romeo 158 on pole with a time of 1 minute 50.2 seconds, 2.6 seconds ahead of Alfa Corse teammate Giuseppe Farina, then escaped the opening-lap collision near Tabac that eliminated nine cars.
The independent Motor Sport account attributes the treacherous patch at Tabac to seawater thrown onto the road by the harbour, while the official classification records the affected drivers as retirements; no further cause is inferred here.
Once the course cleared, Fangio controlled the race for all 100 laps of Monaco's original 3.180-kilometre harbour circuit, the configuration used from 1929 through 1954 before later changes moved the start and added now-familiar sections around the swimming pool and Rascasse.
He completed the 318-kilometre distance in 3 hours 13 minutes 18.7 seconds and also set the fastest lap at 1 minute 51.0 seconds, earning the victory and fastest-lap point that gave him nine championship points.
Alberto Ascari brought a Ferrari 125 F1 home second, one lap behind, while Monaco-born Louis Chiron finished third in a Maserati, two laps behind Fangio.
For Fangio, already an established international racer, this was his first victory in a Formula One World Championship round; it began the championship-winning trajectory that would make Monaco one of the defining places in his career.
