Racing | Formula 1 | 1954 Swiss Grand Prix — Fangio Secures His Second World Title at Bremgarten

At the start-and-finish area of the Bremgarten road circuit on 22 August 1954, Juan Manuel Fangio lined up second beside Ferrari’s José Froilán González for the seventh round of the World Championship of Drivers, with the wooded 7.280-kilometre course cold and damp after rain.

González had taken pole in 2 minutes 39.5 seconds, two tenths faster than Fangio’s Mercedes-Benz W 196 R, but Fangio moved ahead at the start and completed the opening lap with a small lead over González and Stirling Moss.

As the surface dried, Fangio steadily separated himself from the contest behind, while retirements removed Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Maurice Trintignant, and Fangio’s Mercedes-Benz teammate Karl Kling from the classification.

Fangio led all 66 laps, set the official fastest lap on lap 34 in 2 minutes 39.7 seconds, and completed the 480.48-kilometre race in 3 hours 0 minutes 34.5 seconds.

The final classification placed González second, 57.8 seconds behind, and Hans Herrmann third for Mercedes-Benz, one lap down, giving the works team first and third at the last Formula One World Championship race held at Bremgarten.

The victory and fastest-lap point made Fangio uncatchable with the Italian and Spanish Grands Prix still to run, so the flag at Bremgarten secured his second World Drivers’ Championship and the first of four consecutive titles he would win from 1954 through 1957.

The place matters because this was the historical Bremgarten-Rundstrecke through the Bremgartenwald near Bern, not the modern kart circuit of the same name, and both Mercedes-Benz’s event archive and the contemporary Motor Sport report identify the race as 66 laps of the 7.28-kilometre road course.
