Racing|Formula 1|1958 Portuguese Grand Prix — Moss's Evidence Keeps Hawthorn in the Title Race at Boavista

Beside the Atlantic at Circuito da Boavista on 24 August 1958, Mike Hawthorn's Ferrari faced exclusion after he restarted on the final lap while pointed against the race direction, and the witness who helped keep him classified was his championship rival Stirling Moss.

The VII Grande Prémio de Portugal was round nine of the 1958 World Championship of Drivers, with Moss needing to close Hawthorn's points advantage and Vanwall trying to win the first International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers.

Moss started the number 2 Vanwall from pole, completed all 50 laps in 2 hours 11 minutes 27.8 seconds, and won by 312.750 seconds, while Hawthorn's number 22 Ferrari was officially second and Stuart Lewis-Evans placed third for Vanwall one lap behind.

Hawthorn had stopped earlier to adjust weakening front brakes, then produced the official fastest lap of 2 minutes 32.270 seconds on lap 36, earning the extra championship point attached to his six points for second place.

On the final tour Hawthorn spun and stalled as Moss approached to lap him, restarted while on the footpath, turned around on the broad road, and crossed the line, after which officials considered whether moving contrary to the circuit direction required disqualification.

The contemporary Motor Sport report records that the decision was not settled until 11 p.m., when the stewards accepted that the footpath was not the circuit and relied on eyewitness confirmation from Moss that Hawthorn had endangered no other competitor, leaving the final classification unchanged.

Those seven retained points became decisive only later: Formula 1's final standings show Hawthorn champion with 42 counted points to Moss's 41, so Moss's evidence at Porto helped preserve the one-point margin by which his rival won the title.

This pin marks the public Circuito da Boavista near the seafront start-and-finish area, and the memory uses the 7.406-kilometre street configuration followed from the Esplanada do Rio de Janeiro through Avenida da Boavista and surrounding roads from 1952 through 1960, not the shorter revival circuit introduced in 2005.
