Poolburn Dam sits at the edge of the Rock and Pillar Range in Central Otago, an artificial lake ringed by tussock and schist outcrops that has drawn film crews back to it more than once — 10,000 BC used its expanse for wide landscape sequences during the New Zealand leg of the shoot. Reaching it takes commitment: the easiest approach runs thirty kilometers off the highway from Omakau, the roads unsealed and closed outright from early June to late September when the high country locks under snow. Anglers come for brown trout in water dammed originally for irrigation, not for a film crew's horizon line, and most days the dam still belongs to them and to the rabbits and hawks that work the tussock banks. There's no visitor center and no marked lookout, only the water, the schist, and a silence broad enough to explain why directors keep finding wide-open prehistory here.
