10,000 BC|Mount Aspiring National Park — The Valley a Namibian Permit Couldn't Buy

Roland Emmerich wanted to shoot 10,000 BC almost entirely in Africa, but a helicopter sequence ran into permit restrictions there, and his location scouts went looking for the real thing instead of faking it on a soundstage. They found it in Mount Aspiring National Park, New Zealand's third-largest, gazetted in 1964 around the peak the crew could see from nearly any angle they set a camera — 3,033 meters, Tititea in te reo Māori, "the glistening peak." The terrain here is ice-carved and unforgiving in the best way for a rugged-terrain shot: hanging glaciers, beech forest, river flats wide enough to camp on. Anyone chasing the same footage today drives out of Wānaka along Mount Aspiring Road until the seal runs out, then walks the gravel into the West Matukituki Valley beneath ridgelines the aerial unit once flew low over. The Department of Conservation posts weather warnings at every trailhead here for good reason — the valley can turn in an hour. Stand at its mouth on a clear day and the mountain does what it did for the cameras: fills the frame without asking.
