The Adjustment Bureau | Liberty Island — the far end of the shortcut

Liberty Island is where the film cashes in its central conceit. The Bureau's doors have already turned Manhattan into a set of connected rooms, and when the production took its cameras out into the harbour, the point was scale: a chase that started in an office corridor can end on an island in open water, with the statue standing over it and no way back except the boat.

The place rewards the visit on its own terms. The ferry from Battery Park is the only way on, and the crossing is the thing — fifteen minutes in which the skyline shrinks, the wind picks up, and the copper figure gets larger than any photograph has prepared you for. Pedestal and crown tickets sell out weeks ahead; the island itself and the museum that opened in 2019 do not require them.

Walk the loop path around the back of the star fort. From there you see the statue from behind, facing out to sea, which is the angle the postcards never use. It is a reminder that she was placed to be seen by people arriving — which is exactly what David and Elise are, when they land here with no idea how they got across the water.
