Racing | Formula 1 | 1956 Italian Grand Prix — Fangio Finishes in Collins's Car and Secures His Fourth Title at Monza

At the pits of the Autodromo di Monza on 2 September 1956, Juan Manuel Fangio climbed from his retired number 22 Ferrari into teammate Peter Collins’s number 26 car with fifteen laps remaining in the eighth and final round of the World Championship of Drivers.

Fangio had started from pole in 2 minutes 42.6 seconds, while Collins started seventh, but the contemporary Motor Sport report records that the right steering arm on Fangio’s own Lancia-derived Ferrari D50 broke on lap 19 and ended its run.

Shared drives were still permitted, and Collins brought car 26 in on lap 35 for a front-tire change before Fangio took over; Ferrari’s retrospective account describes Collins as still a title contender who surrendered his seat after seeing Fangio stranded in the pits, while the race report establishes the exact handover without reconstructing any private conversation.

Stirling Moss completed all 50 laps in the number 36 Maserati in 2 hours 23 minutes 41.3 seconds, with the Collins-Fangio Ferrari officially classified second, 5.7 seconds behind, and Ron Flockhart’s Connaught-Alta third one lap down.

The six points for second place were divided equally between Collins and Fangio, but the three-point share did not increase Fangio’s championship total because only each driver’s best five results counted and he already had five higher-scoring finishes.

The final official standings therefore remained Fangio 30 points, Moss 27, and Collins 25, making Fangio champion for the fourth time; the shared-car classification is part of that title-deciding finish, but it should not be simplified into a claim that three new counted points alone delivered the championship.

Place matters here because the 1956 race did not use today’s 5.793-kilometre Grand Prix course: Monza’s official history says the event used the 10-kilometre combined layout created in 1955, joining a 5.750-kilometre road section to a 4.250-kilometre high-speed concrete ring with steep banked curves.
