Adventureland|Ludlow Street, Lower East Side — The Door at the End of the Bus Ride

Everything before this is Pennsylvania. The last scene is not. James takes an overnight bus to New York, climbs a tenement stoop on Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side, and knocks — and the film stops without telling you much, which is the most honest thing it does.

Ludlow runs narrow between Houston and Grand, walk-ups on both sides, fire escapes stacked in iron zigzags over the sidewalk. In 1987, when the story is set, this was still the cheap end of Manhattan, the reason a twenty-year-old could afford a room here at all. By the time the film reached cinemas in April 2009, the same blocks held record shops, bars and boutiques, and the rent had long stopped making that kind of sense. The location carries its own joke about arriving somewhere just after it changed.

Come up from the Delancey Street–Essex Street subway and walk north. The tenement fronts are the ones the scene wanted — red brick, iron, a door at the top of a short stoop that could belong to anyone. No music, no crowd, nothing happening. That is what makes the shot land: a whole film building toward a boy standing on an ordinary staircase in an ordinary street, in the last second before he finds out.
