The Adjustment Bureau | Waldorf Astoria New York — the concession speech he never finished

Congressman David Norris has just lost a Senate race by twenty points, and rather than face the ballroom he ducks into a men's room at 301 Park Avenue to rehearse a concession speech at the mirror. A stall door opens. Elise Sellas has been hiding in there for an hour to dodge hotel security after crashing a wedding upstairs. She listens to him practise, tells him the speech is terrible, kisses him, and vanishes — and every strange thing that happens afterwards in The Adjustment Bureau traces back to those ninety seconds of tiled acoustics.

Spike Jonze's New York it is not; Jonze had nothing to do with it. George Nolfi shot the sequence in the real Waldorf, whose corridors and ballroom have absorbed presidential dinners since 1931. The hotel then went dark for eight years of renovation, from March 2017 until it reopened in July 2025, so for most of the film's life the location existed only on screen.

Now you can walk in again. Stand under the Park Avenue lobby's mosaic floor, order something at Peacock Alley, and notice how the acoustics of a great hotel do the same thing to a private conversation that they do to a speech: they make it carry.
