25th Hour | John Finley Walk — The Dog by the River, Still Breathing

The first act of mercy in Spike Lee's film happens on a strip of raised pavement above the FDR Drive. Monty Brogan and Kostya are driving the East River when they see a pit bull dumped on the shoulder — fought, chewed up, left to bleed out. Kostya wants to shoot it and keep moving. Monty crouches, takes the bite on his hand, and carries the animal to the car. The dog gets named Doyle, and for the next twenty-four hours he is the only creature in the story with a future.

John Finley Walk is where Monty later walks him: an elevated esplanade running along the East River from around East 81st Street up to East 90th, cantilevered out over six lanes of highway at the edge of Carl Schurz Park. Iron railing, green benches, joggers before work, the flat mineral smell of the river. Look north and you get Hell Gate and the Wards Island span; across the water it is Queens, low and industrial. The traffic underneath never stops, so the whole promenade carries a faint vibration up through your shoes.

Nothing marks the spot, and that is what makes it work. Come up from the park at East 84th Street and within a minute you are standing where a man with one day left chose to save something instead of finishing it off. Bring a dog if you have one. Half the neighbourhood does, and at seven in the morning the walk still belongs to them.
