Alchemy of Souls | Mungyeong Saejae Open Set — The Capital They Built on a Pass

The roofs arrive before the story does. Tile on tile, painted gates, a palace compound laid out on the slope below Joryeong Mountain as if a kingdom had simply decided to sit down on an old road. This is Mungyeong Saejae Open Set, the Joseon-era film village at 932 Saejae-ro, and it is the face most viewers first accept as Daeho. Songrim's Jeongjingak and the training halls were shot among these replica streets. Actors in black walked the same packed earth that visitors now pay two thousand won to cross.

The pass itself is older than any drama. Yeongnam scholars once climbed it toward the capital; the first and second gates still mark that climb. The set is a later invention, rebuilt in 2008 after the Goryeo village for Taejo Wang Geon came down, and it has since absorbed Kingdom, The Moon Embracing the Sun, and Under the Queen's Umbrella as well as Alchemy of Souls. Stand inside the compound and the mountains close the horizon the way they do on screen. The buildings are timber and plaster. The wind is real. What the camera added was a lake-country that never existed. What remains is a working pilgrimage stop: ticketed, mapped, and still open between late morning and late afternoon except on New Year's Day, Seollal, and Chuseok.
