Almost Famous|The Pond, Central Park — The Walk After Everything

Near the end of the film, after the tour and the crash landing of every confession in it, William and Penny walk in Central Park beside the Pond. It is a short scene and it does the quiet work: two people used up by the same year, finally talking as themselves rather than as a reporter and a Band Aid.

The Pond is the first water you meet coming into the park at Grand Army Plaza — a curving stretch of it tucked under the southeast corner, held in by rock outcrops and willows. Gapstow Bridge crosses its narrow neck in a single low arc of Manhattan schist, built in 1896 to replace a wooden span that had rotted through. Stand on the bridge looking north and the towers of Central Park South stack up behind the trees. Turn south and the park closes over you inside thirty seconds of walking.

That compression is why the scene belongs here. The city is still visible and no longer loud. It is the only place in the film where these two are somewhere a band did not take them.

The Pond is open, free, and busy at every hour. Come in the last hour before sunset in autumn, take the west shore path in from the Sixth Avenue entrance, and stop on the bridge. The skyline turns the water copper, and nobody makes you leave.
