On 7 February 2014 the board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG named Spohr chairman of the executive board, to succeed Christoph Franz on 1 May 2014.
He had sat on the group board since 1 January 2011 as chairman of the Passage executive board.
The working campus of that chair is the Lufthansa Aviation Center on the Airportring at Frankfurt Airport, a building opened in 2006.
The company's legal seat remains Cologne.
Der Spiegel and Aviation Week both reported the 7 February vote and the 1 May start on the day the board met.
He still holds a captain's rating on the Airbus A320 family.
