Racing | Formula 1 | 1992 Belgian Grand Prix — Schumacher Takes His First Win at Spa

On 30 August 1992, the Belgian Grand Prix brought the Formula One World Championship to Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, where changing rain turned a fast Ardennes circuit into a test of timing as much as speed.

Michael Schumacher started third in the number 19 Benetton-Ford, behind pole-sitter Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna, and stayed in contention as the track moved between wet and dry conditions.

On lap 30 Schumacher ran wide at Stavelot, recovered, and noticed that teammate Martin Brundle’s wet tyres were blistering, evidence that the racing line was drying faster than it appeared from the cockpit.

Schumacher immediately stopped for slick tyres, while Brundle continued for another lap and the Williams drivers delayed their own changes, allowing the Benetton to gain the lead through a decision made from direct observation rather than a prearranged signal.

Mansell later reduced the gap, but both Williams cars developed loose left exhausts, and Schumacher held the advantage through the final laps.

After 44 laps he won in 1:36:10.721, finishing 36.595 seconds ahead of Mansell, with Riccardo Patrese third and Brundle fourth; the official classification records no penalty that altered those positions.

Schumacher also set the fastest lap, 1:53.791 on lap 39, completing his first Formula One victory at the circuit where he had made his championship debut one year earlier.

The result made him the first German winner of a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix since Jochen Mass in 1975, while Williams secured the 1992 Constructors’ Championship despite losing the race.

The event used Spa’s 6.940-kilometre, 19-turn configuration with the original Bus Stop chicane, a layout employed from 1981 through 1993.
