On 30 October 1988, Suzuka Circuit hosted the fifteenth round of the Formula One World Championship and the race that decided Ayrton Senna’s first drivers’ title.
Senna had taken pole for McLaren-Honda with a 1:41.853 lap, 0.324 seconds ahead of teammate and championship rival Alain Prost.
At the start, Senna’s engine stalled, but Suzuka’s downhill grid allowed him to bump-start the car; by the end of the opening lap he had fallen to fourteenth.
With victory required to secure the championship at this round, Senna worked back through the field and took the lead on lap 28.
He also set the race’s fastest lap, 1:46.326 on lap 33, before completing all 51 laps in 1:33:26.173.
Prost finished second, 13.363 seconds behind, and Thierry Boutsen placed third, 36.109 seconds behind Senna; no later penalty changed that podium.
The victory secured Senna’s first Formula One World Drivers’ Championship, while McLaren’s 1988 season continued toward a record of fifteen wins from sixteen races.
