Racing | Formula 1 | 1994 German Grand Prix — Berger Ends Ferrari's Four-Year Wait at Hockenheim

On 31 July 1994, Gerhard Berger placed the number 28 Ferrari 412 T1 on pole at Hockenheimring for the Grosser Mobil 1 Preis von Deutschland, round nine of the Formula One World Championship.

The race used the 6.823-kilometre, 16-turn Hockenheim configuration that ran through the forest before returning to the Motodrom, including the Clark, Ost, and Senna chicanes rather than the shorter circuit introduced in 2002.

Berger’s 1:43.582 qualifying lap led a Ferrari front row, with Jean Alesi second, Damon Hill third for Williams-Renault, and championship leader Michael Schumacher fourth for Benetton-Ford.

At the start Berger kept the lead while a chain of collisions eliminated much of the field before and through the first corner, and Alesi stopped with an electrical failure before completing a lap.

Only thirteen cars were still running after lap one, leaving Schumacher second and the Ligier-Renaults of Olivier Panis and Éric Bernard positioned to benefit from the attrition.

Berger remained ahead as Schumacher’s engine failure ended the Benetton driver’s race after 20 laps, promoting Panis and Bernard to second and third.

After 45 laps Berger won in 1:22:37.272, 54.779 seconds ahead of Panis, with Bernard classified third at 65.042 seconds; Formula 1’s final classification records the same podium and no later penalty changed it.

David Coulthard set the official fastest lap for Williams-Renault in 1:46.211 on lap 11, while Berger controlled the race from pole rather than relying on fastest-lap pace.

The victory was Ferrari’s first in the Formula One World Championship since Alain Prost won the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix, ending a four-season gap and giving the team its only win of 1994.

At the old Hockenheimring, Ferrari converted renewed qualifying speed into a completed race distance and returned to the top step of a Formula One podium.
