Biography | Charles III — The Senate House Where an Heir Became a University Graduate

People often remember Charles III's education as preparation for public duty arranged around his title. At Cambridge, the important result came through an examined undergraduate course.

Charles entered Trinity College in October 1967, aged eighteen. Choosing university before full-time military service departed from the route followed by earlier heirs in his immediate family.

He began with archaeology and anthropology for the first part of the Tripos. For the second part he changed to history, a sequence recorded by both the University of Cambridge and Trinity College.

His second year also included a term at University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, where he studied Welsh language and history before the 1969 investiture. That Welsh term supported a ceremonial role; the Cambridge course still had to be completed on academic terms.

In June 1970, Charles graduated Bachelor of Arts with lower second-class honours, commonly written as a 2:2. Cambridge identifies him as the first British heir apparent to earn a university degree.

The distinction matters because royal connections to Cambridge were much older than this achievement. His grandfather, the future George VI, studied at Trinity for three terms in 1919–1920 but left as royal duties increased.

The degree belonged to the University of Cambridge, although the teaching and daily college life belonged to Trinity. Cambridge presents graduands for their degrees in Senate House, the eighteenth-century university building pinned here.

That setting separates the academic act from the college gates tourists usually associate with Charles's student years. The Portland-stone hall is where the university turns completed study into a recorded degree.

Cambridge later promoted his BA to the customary Master of Arts in 1975, without a further course of study. That later ceremony should not be confused with the June 1970 milestone described here.
