People treat Akamai as a Cambridge edge network that always printed AKAM on a quiet infrastructure book.
The October 1999 issuer was a fourteen-month-old content-delivery shop that had not yet earned a profit.
Akamai's investor FAQ records that the company went public on 29 October 1999 at 26 dollars a share.
The Associated Press, in the New York Times the next morning, recorded that the stock opened at 110 dollars and closed at 145.1875 dollars on Nasdaq.
MarketWatch the same afternoon put the offering at 9 million shares, proceeds of 234 million dollars in 1999 currency, and 90.4 million shares outstanding.
That close implied a market capitalization of about 13.1 billion dollars in 1999 currency.
Wired recorded first-nine-month 1999 revenue of 1.2 million dollars and a net loss of 28 million dollars in 1999 currency.
The mechanism is a still-unprofitable routing formula priced as public internet capacity at the peak of the first web boom.
A 26-dollar offer that opens at 110 dollars is not a mature utility print. It is a scarcity auction for a map of congested paths.
Nasdaq MarketSite at 4 Times Square opened in 2000, months after this session. The pin is that later public facade. Interior studios are not a visitor floor.
