Finance History|11 Wall Street — AOC Stopped and the Letters AON Opened
kevin
People treat Aon as a Dublin and London broker that always printed AON on a New York tape.
The letters arrived late. The holding book was already public.
Combined Insurance Company of America formed Combined International Corporation as a listed parent in 1980.
The New York book first used PMA, for W. Clement Stone's Positive Mental Attitude phrase, then AOC after the parent took the Aon name.
Shareholders voted in March 1987 to rename Combined International Corporation as Aon Corporation. Aon is a Gaelic word the company defined as oneness.
The 1982 combination with Ryan Insurance Group, at 133 million U.S. dollars in 1982 currency, had already put Patrick G. Ryan in the chief-executive chair. That founding desk is a separate pin.
On 23 November 2009 Aon said the New York Stock Exchange ticker would change from AOC to AON at the opening on 1 December 2009.
The company stated the point in one sentence. The tape should match the brand.
No new shares were sold that morning. The same common book kept trading under three letters instead of three others.
A later Irish reorganization, effective 1 April 2020, kept the same AON symbol on the same exchange after the U.K. shares were cancelled.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the exchange that printed the letters. The trading floor is not a visitor gallery.
The mechanism is a ticker change that aligned an already-listed holding company with the name it had used since 1987.
