People treat Target as a Minneapolis discounter that always printed TGT after a finished New York book.
The letters arrived by rename.
The New York Times dated 14 January 2000 records that Dayton Hudson Corporation would change its name to Target Corporation and trade under TGT.
The name change took effect 30 January 2000 at the start of the fiscal year.
Period trade coverage records that TGT opened on the New York tape on 31 January 2000.
Dayton common had been publicly traded since 1967.
The present tape is still TGT on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a ticker and holding-company rename of an already-listed retail book, not a cash initial public offering.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange, where TGT opened.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
