People treat Teledyne Technologies as a Thousand Oaks instruments house that always printed TDY after a finished New York book.
The letters arrived as a spin.
A Teledyne Form 8-K/A dated 29 November 1999 records that Allegheny Teledyne Incorporated distributed all of Teledyne Technologies common stock to ATI stockholders that day.
The same filing records an aggregate of 26,603,102 Teledyne shares distributed, with the new common trading on the New York Stock Exchange under TDY.
A later Teledyne Form 10-Q states the distribution ratio as one Teledyne share for every seven ATI shares held by stockholders of record on 22 November 1999.
The Los Angeles Times dated 25 November 1999 records that Teledyne Technologies shares were scheduled to begin trading that Monday on the New York tape.
ATI's 1999 annual report records that the parent then effected a one-for-two reverse split and renamed itself Allegheny Technologies Incorporated.
The present tape is still TDY on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a tax-free spin of aerospace and electronics shops out of a metals conglomerate, not a cash initial public offering.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange, where TDY opened.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
