People treat Oracle as an Austin software house that always printed ORCL after a finished New York book.
The March 1986 issuer was Oracle Corporation, the database software company founded in 1977 as Software Development Laboratories and listed that day on Nasdaq.
Oracle's own corporate timeline records that the company went public on Nasdaq in 1986 under the letters ORCL.
A later MarketWatch reconstruction of that week's technology offerings records the shares priced at fifteen U.S. dollars in 1986 dollars and closed the first afternoon at twenty dollars and fifty cents.
The book later moved to the New York Stock Exchange on 15 July 2013 and kept the same letters.
The present tape is still ORCL on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a cash initial public offering that put a still-private database vendor onto Nasdaq the day before Microsoft's own offering.
The pin is the public Times Square facade of Nasdaq MarketSite, the present street marker for the tape that first printed ORCL.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
