People treat Southwest Airlines as a Dallas carrier that always printed LUV after a finished New York book.
The first cash offering was earlier and smaller.
The company's investor FAQ records an initial public offering on 8 June 1971 of 650,000 shares at about 11 dollars a share in 1971 currency.
The principal underwriters were Thomson McKinnon Auchincloss and Model, Roland.
That offering did not put the letters on the New York tape.
A company history page compiled for the airline's own media archive records that Southwest stock was listed on the New York Stock Exchange as LUV in 1977.
The letters were a pun on Love Field, the Dallas airport that remains the operating base.
The mechanism is an already-public regional carrier accepted onto the listed New York book, not a floor-priced initial public offering at 11 Wall Street in 1971.
The present tape is still LUV on the New York Stock Exchange.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange, where LUV opened.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
