People treat the Bayer campus as a place you inherit.

Baumann arrived from Krefeld with a new economics diploma and no family tie to the works.

Bayer's own history page records that he joined in 1988 and that his first duties were in the Corporate Finance Department in Leverkusen.

The registered headquarters is Kaiser-Wilhelm-Allee 1, 51373 Leverkusen.

The older Hauptverwaltung on this avenue, finished in 1912 and 1913, is a listed building.

The later Helmut Jahn headquarters stands on the same public campus.

From this street the firm sent him to Barcelona in 1991 as a controller at Bayer Hispania Comercial.

In 1995 he became assistant to the managing director there.

In 1996 he moved to Bayer Corporation in Tarrytown, New York, and later headed global planning for the Diagnostics business.

He returned to Leverkusen in July 2002.

The month of the 1988 start is less settled.

Manager Magazin gave 1 September; other summaries give only the year.
