Biography|Patrick Pouyanné — The Boulevard Saint-Michel Hôtel Where He Entered the Corps des Mines

École Polytechnique is the name people remember.

The school that actually placed Patrick Pouyanné in the French industrial state sits on boulevard Saint-Michel.

After the 1986 X diploma he continued as élève-ingénieur at École des mines de Paris, promotion 1986, and entered the Corps des Mines.

The Annales des Mines notice and TotalEnergies' later board biography both record that second school.

The pin is the Hôtel de Vendôme at 60 boulevard Saint-Michel, the school's Paris house since the nineteenth century.

The mineralogy museum still opens to the public through the same façade.

This is a state grande école, not a private residence.

The Corps des Mines is the track that feeds the industry ministry, the cabinets, and later the energy majors.

Pouyanné used it in that order.

In 1989 he went to the Ministry of Industry.

By 1993 he was at Matignon.

Only in January 1997 did Elf take him to Angola.

The boulevard building is easy to walk past on the way to the Luxembourg Gardens.

It is the hinge between the Palaiseau maths rooms and the first oil posting.

Without this school the later titles — secretary-general in Luanda, company representative in Doha, president of refining and chemicals — do not have a French administrative origin.

The company biography still leads with both diplomas for that reason.

Stand at number 60 and the story is institutional rather than romantic.

A customs director's son used the republican concours to reach the corps that writes industrial files.
