You're Beautiful|Kokusai-dori, Naha — The Street the Okinawa Chapters Had to Cross

Episodes 14 and 15 send Hwang Tae-kyung and Go Mi-nyeo to Japan to face the parents' past. The production left the peninsula for Okinawa. The public street that still carries that chapter is Kokusai-dori in Naha — the 1.6-kilometre spine locals call the Miracle Mile.

The road runs through Makishi, a few minutes from the monorail. Orion signs, shiisa statues, souvenir alleys, and the covered Heiwa-dori market peel off the main drag. In 2009 a Korean crew filming a boy-band romance used this island the way later dramas would use Jeju: as the place the plot goes when Seoul cannot hold the secret anymore.

You will not find a plaque that says A.N.JELL slept here. What you find is the same humid evening light, the same tourist density, the same sense that the city is performing for visitors. Walk from Kencho-mae toward Makishi Station after dark. The neon is louder than anything in the convent scenes. That is the point of the Okinawa episodes. The girl who almost took vows is standing in a street built for display.

You're Beautiful premiered on 7 October 2009. The Japan shoot is the last geography the series adds. Start at the Ryubo department store end of the street. Finish at the Yatai-mura stalls. The drama's parents' secret is finished. The street keeps selling the island.
