People treat AMETEK as a Berwyn instruments house that always printed AME on a modern tape.
The first letters belonged to a 1930 holding company assembled after a bankruptcy.
Stockholders of the failed Manhattan Electric Supply Company formed American Machine and Metals, Inc. in 1930.
Company histories date the New York Stock Exchange listing of that new name to the same year, under the letters AME.
Market directories conventionally give 1 July 1930 as the listing date.
A 1931 Commercial and Financial Chronicle balance sheet already used 1 July 1930 as a comparative date for the new firm.
The first book bundled laundry machinery, an electric shop, and a Montana mine.
Manhattan Electric itself was sold out of the group by the end of 1931.
Stockholders approved the AMETEK name in 1961 and kept the same three letters on the tape.
In May 2023 the company marked more than ninety-three years as a listed name by ringing the NYSE closing bell.
This pin is the 1930 listing under the original corporate title, not the later instruments acquisitions.
The mechanism was a post-crash recapitalization that put a new holding company onto an existing specialist post.
