Finance History|11 Wall Street — Alkaloidal Pills Take a Public Book the Year the Tape Broke

People treat Abbott as an Abbott Park campus and a later AbbVie parent.
The first public book was written in Chicago, in the same year the New York tape cracked.
Dr. Wallace C. Abbott began making alkaloidal granules in 1888 behind People's Drug Store on Ravenswood Avenue. First-year sales were 2,000 dollars in 1888 currency.
The firm incorporated as the Abbott Alkaloidal Company in 1894 and took the name Abbott Laboratories in 1915.
The pills were a dosing machine. Plant alkaloids such as quinine and morphine were milled into uniform granules so a physician did not have to guess the strength of a tincture.
Abbott's own heritage page records an initial public offering in 1929, the year the New York market broke. The company states that the shares rose from the first day and that the Depression-era book stayed open.
A later secondary date of 1 March 1937 appears in some market databases. That figure is a later tape start, not the offering Abbott itself dates to 1929. This memory follows the company's date and does not invent a 1929 print price.
Nation's Commerce noted in 1932 that few large industrials had a sounder prior-year record. Vitamins and intravenous solutions carried the Depression book.
The Ravenswood plants were a poor neighbor. A 1905 fire and later fumes pushed the firm out of the city. In 1925 manufacturing moved to rural North Chicago, the ground that became Abbott Park.
On 1 January 2013 Abbott distributed one AbbVie share for each Abbott share. The research-drug book left. The ABT tape stayed on the Big Board for devices, diagnostics and nutrition.
The mechanism is a kitchen-scale alkaloid shop that sold a public share in a crash year and kept the listing by making hospital fluids instead of a single patent medicine.
The pin is the public Broad Street viewpoint at 11 Wall Street. The 1888 drugstore is gone. The later brick at 4753 North Ravenswood is a later plant, not the first counter.
