The Xiaomi story starts in 2010 only if you skip the software firm that trained him.
Lei Jun joined Kingsoft as an engineer in 1992.
By 1998 he was the general manager, after Lenovo put money in and founder Qiu Bojun stepped back from day-to-day control.
He spent the next nine years turning a word-processor house that had been losing ground to Microsoft Office into a company that also sold games and security software.
On 9 October 2007 Kingsoft Corporation Limited listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the code 3888.
The listing raised close to 100 million US dollars.
He resigned as president and CEO later that December, citing health.
He later returned as chairman.
The trading floor is in Exchange Square at 8 Connaught Place in Central.
The building is still the exchange's public face.
A visitor standing at the podium sees a later Xiaomi listing in the same rooms.
That is a different day.
