UNEP's executive director is elected in New York and then has to take the job in Nairobi.
On 16 March 2006 the General Assembly elected Achim Steiner of Germany for a four-year term.
Kofi Annan had nominated him the previous day.
A UN press note issued in French the same week fixed the first term from 15 June 2006 to 14 June 2010.
UN News recorded that he would succeed Klaus Töpfer after two terms.
He became the fifth executive director of the Nairobi-based programme.
A later Secretary-General note listed the renewals: decision 64/420 carried him to 14 June 2014, then decision 68/416 to 14 June 2016.
From March 2009 to May 2011 he was also Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
The vote was taken in this complex. The desk sat on United Nations Avenue in Gigiri, next to Karura Forest.
Erik Solheim took over in June 2016.
