Biography | Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani — The Engineer Who Joined Qatargas as Ras Laffan Was Still Rising
kevin
People meet Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani as the royal who ran Al Jazeera, then Qatar's economy ministry.
The paper trail starts farther north, on a restricted industrial shore that did not yet have its finished skyline.
In 1995 he joined Qatargas Operating Company Limited as an engineer.
The network biography published when Al Jazeera named him director general traces the next sixteen years on that ladder: production engineering, then production and reservoirs, then offshore operations, then head of engineering and projects.
Qatargas I broke ground in 1994.
Ras Laffan Industrial City was commissioned in 1996, when the first liquefaction trains came online against the North Field.
He was inside that build, not watching it from a Doha office tower.
The same official biography later credited him with more than 247 capital projects at Qatargas and with a seat on the company's senior leadership team.
He also spent about a year at Total and more than a year at Mobil Oil research, including the Mobil research center then known as MPTC in Dallas.
The visitor standing at the public edge of Ras Laffan will not walk the trains.
The industrial city remains a controlled energy precinct administered today by QatarEnergy.
What is visible from the ridges and the access roads is the reason the job existed: storage spheres, flare stacks, and the largest LNG export complex on the Gulf.
Qatargas itself was founded in 1984.
By the time he left for the news network in 2011, the company sat at the center of Qatar's claim on seaborne gas.
That is the origin of the executive the board later dropped into a newsroom.
