Biography|Arthur Mensch — The fMRI Thesis Defended at NeuroSpin
kevin
On 28 September 2018 Arthur Mensch defended a doctoral thesis at Gif-sur-Yvette, on the Saclay plateau a few kilometres west of Palaiseau.
The title was Apprentissage de représentations en imagerie fonctionnelle — learning representations from functional MRI data.
The work sat in the Parietal team, a joint Inria and CEA group housed at NeuroSpin, the CEA's brain-imaging centre that opened in 2007 as Building 145.
Bertrand Thirion directed the thesis. Gaël Varoquaux and Julien Mairal co-supervised. The jury sat at Université Paris-Saclay.
This was not a language-model laboratory. It was statistics applied to brain maps: scalable decompositions of huge fMRI datasets, then decoding models that tried to read cognitive tasks back out of those maps.
The official NeuroSpin GPS used by the lab is 48.720391 N, 2.151911 E, at the CEA Porte Sud / Mare du Vivier entrance.
French Wikipedia places the centre at 48°43′11″N, 2°09′03″E. Both describe the same CEA Saclay cluster. The pin here follows the lab's own visitor coordinates.
From September 2015 to September 2018 the thesis was funded by a French ministry grant. A postdoc at ENS followed, with a spell at NYU's Courant Institute.
The defence date is the hard fact. Everything later — DeepMind, then Mistral — sits on this three-year grind through other people's brain scans.
A visitor sees a research building on a controlled CEA site, not an open museum. Hours and access follow CEA rules.
