Biography|Sergio Ermotti — The Month at Oxford Saïd in 2001

The usual story of a Swiss bank chief skips the month he spent beside Oxford station.

Sergio Ermotti has no undergraduate degree. His formal papers are a Swiss federal banking-expert diploma and one short executive course.

That course was the Advanced Management Programme at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School.

In a conversation recorded at the school in 2024 he placed the month in 2001, when he already held a senior job and could spare only four weeks.

The Park End Street building had just opened that year, on the old Rewley Road station site opposite Oxford railway station, after Wafic Saïd's gift rebuilt the school.

He came as a Merrill Lynch markets executive, not as a student starting out. The point of the programme, as he later described it on that same visit, was to step out of a specialised trading day and sit with people from other countries and other industries.

Oxford Saïd still lists him as a graduate of the AMP and as a member of the school's Global Leadership Council.

The building a visitor finds now is larger than the one he sat in. The Thatcher Business Education Centre opened on the same Park End Street plot in 2012.

The original school block, with its glass and stone facing the station, is the one that matches the 2001 date.

This is the formation memory that does not look like formation. He was already co-heading global equity markets at Merrill by the early 2000s.

The AMP did not invent the banker. It is the public, dated place where the trader from Lugano sat still long enough to take a broader brief.

From Oxford the next public chapter is Italian: UniCredit, deputy chief executive, then the exit in 2010 that sent him back toward Switzerland.

Park End Street is a working campus, not a shrine. The doors face the station. Anyone can stand on the pavement and see the building that opened the year he was inside it.
