The Intel curriculum vitae compresses a decade into one line: Stanford, materials science.
The line hides how long he stayed.
Barrett entered in 1957.
He took a B.S. in materials science in 1961, then a master's, then a Ph.D. in 1964.
He did not leave.
After a NATO postdoctoral year in Britain he came back as an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
By 1970 he was an associate professor.
He published some forty technical papers.
With William D. Nix and Alan S. Tetelman he wrote The Principles of Engineering Materials, issued in 1973 and kept in classrooms for decades after.
In 1969 he received the Robert Lansing Hardy Award from the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers.
The department's offices now sit in the William F. Durand Building at 496 Lomita Mall, the building under this pin.
Whether every 1960s lecture was delivered inside these exact walls is not something the public record settles.
The work was done on this campus.
A one-year leave in 1973 took him into Intel as a visitor.
He returned to Stanford, then quit the faculty for good in 1974.
The professor nickname followed him into Santa Clara and never quite left.
