Biography | Elon Musk — Penn’s 1997 Degrees in Physics and Economics

In 1997, the University of Pennsylvania awarded Elon Musk two completed undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in physics and a Bachelor of Science in economics from the Wharton School, as Penn has publicly confirmed. Philadelphia belongs in his education story because these are the completed degrees, even though he had already left campus for California.

Musk came to Penn after studying at Queen’s University in Ontario. His undergraduate work crossed the School of Arts and Sciences and Wharton, bringing physics and business into the same period of study.

The dates describe two different milestones. Knowledge at Wharton’s account of his 2009 campus lecture says that he left Penn in 1995 and formally graduated in 1997.

That distinction matters when reading short biographies that assign everything to a single year. Departure from campus and the university’s award of a degree need not occur together; this memory does not assign an unverified administrative or immigration-related reason to the interval.

After leaving Penn, Musk planned graduate work at Stanford in materials science but pursued an internet business instead. Wharton dates the start of Zip2, which connected business listings with online maps, to 1995.

The map marker identifies College Hall as a campus landmark for this educational chapter. It does not establish that Musk received his diplomas inside the building or identify a particular classroom in which he studied.

Penn’s history of its campus describes College Hall as its first building at the West Philadelphia site, completed in 1873. Its long institutional history gives visitors a visible connection to the university that issued the degrees.

The photographs span later years: College Hall was photographed in 2015, and the portrait shows Musk in 2018. Neither records the 1997 degree award.
