People treat Hawthorne and Starbase as the first SpaceX addresses.
The company opened in a rented warehouse on this El Segundo street.
Space Exploration Technologies Corporation was incorporated on 14 March 2002.
An early SpaceX website, archived in September 2002, listed 1310 East Grand Avenue, El Segundo, California, with a phone number in the 310-414 exchange.
The same page said operations began in June 2002, about a mile from Los Angeles International Airport, in the middle of the old South Bay aerospace belt.
The first rooms were about 3,000 square feet.
Tom Mueller and Chris Thompson were among the earliest hires; Gwynne Shotwell joined the following year.
The building itself was a one-storey industrial box from the late 1960s.
A 2024 market note recorded that a seafood distributor later occupied the lot.
SpaceX's own tenth-anniversary post put the first manufacturing floor in El Segundo before the move into the former Northrop plant on the Hawthorne airfield.
The pin is the first rented address, not the later factory and not a current workplace routine.
What stands here now is not a rocket shop.
The fact that remains is the street number on the 2002 letterhead.
