His first public document is a mechanical-engineering dissertation.

Döllner studied Maschinenbau, Konstruktion and Fahrzeugtechnik at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, with a period at the University of Waterloo in Ontario.

In 1993 he entered Volkswagen in Wolfsburg as a doctoral student while the thesis was still being written.

The Deutsche Nationalbibliothek records the finished work under 1997: Konzipierung und Anwendung von Maßnahmen zur Verkürzung der Produktentwicklungszeit am Beispiel der Aggregateentwicklung, issued by the Institut für Konstruktionslehre, Maschinen- und Feinwerkelemente.

English-language summaries sometimes date the doctorate to 1996, the year Audi's official biography says he began work as a systems analyst after the promotion. The catalogue year is 1997.

The pin is the historic Altgebäude on Pockelsstraße, the core of the campus where that faculty sat.
