Biography | Jeff Bezos — Princeton, 1986: An Engineering Degree Before Amazon
kevin
In 1986, Jeff Bezos graduated from Princeton University in electrical engineering and computer science. His undergraduate qualification was a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, an educational milestone eight years before he founded Amazon.
Princeton’s account of his education records graduation with highest honors and election to Phi Beta Kappa. Amazon’s official biography independently gives the same subjects and graduation year.
The accompanying yearbook image brings that record back to the student. His entry names electrical engineering and computer science, Quadrangle Club, Tau Beta Pi, and his presidency of Princeton’s chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space.
These details put technical study and an interest in space alongside ordinary campus affiliations. They do not make the later companies inevitable; they show what was already part of his life when he left university.
In a 2000 interview with Princeton Alumni Weekly, Bezos looked back on his concentration on engineering classes and the quality of his computer science education. This contemporary interview provides a firmer account of his student experience than a reconstructed scene around a single difficult physics problem.
The Engineering Quadrangle is the geographic reference for this chapter of his education. The marker does not identify the room where he chose his major or the site where his degree was presented.
The next stage unfolded in New York: Princeton describes his work in computer systems and finance at Bankers Trust and D. E. Shaw before Amazon. The online bookstore belongs to the later entrepreneurial chapter, rather than to a business already operating from this campus.
Bezos returned to Princeton to deliver its Baccalaureate address on 30 May 2010. The university’s report of that ceremony locates the occasion in the University Chapel, a separate place and moment from his undergraduate studies.
