Kristalina Ivanova Georgieva was born in Sofia on 13 August 1953.

She studied political economy and sociology at the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics, the school later renamed the University of National and World Economy.

She graduated in 1976 and stayed as a teacher from 1977 to 1993.

In 1986 she took a doctorate in economic science.

The thesis title, recorded in later encyclopedias and official biographies, was Environmental Protection Policy and Economic Growth in the USA.

That subject was unusual for a Bulgarian faculty still working under a planned economy.

English Wikipedia and the university's own alumni notes both keep the affiliation.
