Biography|Mark Ein — The Economics Degree He Finished in Steinberg-Dietrich Hall

Mark David Ein was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on 31 December 1964.

By the mid-1980s he was walking Locust Walk as a Wharton undergraduate, not yet the investor who would put a tennis stadium on a demolished convention-center lot.

The building that still carries the school's name on this facade is Steinberg Hall–Dietrich Hall, at 3620 Locust Walk.

Dietrich Hall opened in 1952 as Wharton's purpose-built home after the school left Logan Hall.

A renovation and addition finished in 1983, while Ein was still enrolled, wrapped the older limestone-faced hall and added the brick-and-glass front that faces the walk today.

He took a Bachelor of Science in economics with a concentration in finance, graduating in 1987.

He was a member of Phi Delta Theta on the same campus.

Huntsman Hall, the later landmark across Walnut Street, did not exist yet. It opened in 2002.

The classrooms that produced the 1987 class sat in this block.

What followed was a conventional elite path that he would later leave: Harvard Business School, then Goldman Sachs, Brentwood Associates, and The Carlyle Group in Washington.

The Chevy Chase childhood and the Penn degree are the two public facts that fix him as a local before he became a local owner.

Steinberg-Dietrich remains in use as a Wharton building.
