Biography|Massimo Ciociola — The Day TPG Took the Majority and Bologna Kept the Office

On 27 July 2022 the usual Italian startup story flipped. A Silicon Valley fund bought the majority, and the company stayed on Via San Vitale.

La Repubblica, BolognaToday and StartupItalia all dated the announcement to that day. TPG Growth became the majority shareholder of Musixmatch.

Existing investors remained. The management, including founder and chief executive Massimo Ciociola, was confirmed.

The deal value was not disclosed in the contemporary coverage.

What the papers did record was the geography. After twelve years the largest lyrics database in the market was still a Bologna company with a London sales office, not a Delaware re-incorporation.

Ciociola, then forty-five, had spent the previous decade telling foreign visitors to look for Ducati and Lamborghini if they could not find Bologna on a map.

The TPG news flipped that joke. The fund that had already written checks to Spotify, Airbnb and Uber was now the majority owner of a firm whose public address is still Via San Vitale 5.

The pin is the same door as the 2010 founding. The moment is different: a control change, not an incorporation.

Mayor Matteo Lepore issued congratulations the same day, treating the investment as a page in the city’s quieter startup ledger rather than a farewell to California.

For a visitor the useful fact is simpler. The office that licensed lyrics to the large streaming services did not leave the first block off the Two Towers when the cap table did.
