When Life Gives You Tangerines | Seongsan Ilchulbong — Three Thousand Bows on the Crater

The crater does not look like a temple. It looks like a wall the sea failed to finish.

Seongsan Ilchulbong rises on Jeju's east coast at 284-12 Ilchul-ro in Seongsan-eup, a tuff cone the island still uses as its sunrise. When Life Gives You Tangerines brings Ae-sun here after marriage, when a child will not come. Her mother-in-law leads her up the slope. The cameras hold the climb. The bows are not scenery. They are work the family thinks the mountain can hear.

The cone is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Natural Monument. The trail to the rim takes twenty to thirty minutes. You pay at the gate and walk a path that already had tourists before the drama. The production did not invent the view. It used the one Jeju had already printed on every postcard.

At the top the crater is a bowl of grass. Below it the sea keeps hitting the same cliff. The drama needed a place large enough to hold a private grief in public. This is that place. You come down with wind in your ears and the count of the bows still in your legs.
