Biography | Pat Gelsinger — Born in the Iron-Furnace Borough of Robesonia

People treat Pat Gelsinger as a Silicon Valley product who arrived already trained.

The first pin is a Berks County borough of about two thousand people.

Patrick Paul Gelsinger was born on 5 March 1961 in Robesonia, Pennsylvania.

His parents, Paul and June Gelsinger, raised him on family farms in an Amish and Mennonite stretch of the county.

In a 2019 Computer History Museum oral history he said he expected, as a boy, to become a farmer.

The farmhouse itself is a private residence. This pin is the borough municipal building at 75 South Brook Street, the civic building a visitor can stand in front of without knocking on a kitchen door.

Robesonia was laid out in 1855 around iron furnaces that had run here since the 1790s.

The Conrad Weiser district still serves the town. That is the high school he would have finished had he stayed through senior year.

At sixteen he sat an electronics scholarship exam for Lincoln Technical Institute a year early and won it.

He left the borough for Allentown, finished enough credits for a high-school diploma, and took an associate degree that put him on an airplane to California at eighteen.

The later titles — i486 architect, Intel's first chief technology officer, VMware chief executive, Intel chief executive — sit on this street grid first.

A farm kid from western Berks County is not the usual origin story for a Mission College Boulevard office.

It is the one the records support.
