People who meet Uğur Şahin as BioNTech's chief executive tend to start the story in a Mainz laboratory.

The earlier pin is a schoolyard in Cologne-Niehl.

He was born on 19 September 1965 in İskenderun, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.

At four he came to West Germany with his mother to join his father, who worked at Ford's Cologne plant.

The family settled in the city's north.

The school at Castroper Straße 7 was then the Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium Köln-Niehl.

It had opened only in 1966.

It took the name Erich-Kästner-Gymnasium in 1989, after he had already left.

Şahin took the Abitur here in 1984.

His advanced courses were mathematics and chemistry.

The Munzinger archive and the German biographical record both describe him as top of that graduating class.

From this building he went straight into medicine at the University of Cologne.

Nothing in the later company story makes sense without that sequence: a Gastarbeiter household, a neighbourhood Gymnasium, then a medical faculty a tram ride south.

West Germany in the 1970s still treated many guest-worker families as temporary.

Citizenship was not the default path.

The school on Castroper Straße was ordinary municipal infrastructure, not a magnet academy.
