Dynastic History | Andohalo, Antananarivo — The Square Where the Court Changed Its Religion

Andohalo is a terraced open ground on the ridge below the royal compound, and for most of the nineteenth century it was where the sovereign of Imerina addressed the assembled population. A kabary, the formal public address, was the state's principal instrument for announcing law and settling obligation. Andohalo was its room.

On 3 September 1868 Ramoma was crowned there as Ranavalona II. Her prime minister, Rainilaiarivony, had held office since 14 July 1864 and would keep it until October 1895; he married each of the three queens who reigned in that stretch, and those marriages were terms of government rather than of affection. On 21 February 1869 the queen and the prime minister were married at Andohalo in a public ceremony at which the court declared itself Christian. Later that year the sampy, the royal talismans whose keepers had held office within the state, were burned.

What followed was administrative more than devotional: congregations, schools and registers, with school attendance made compulsory in 1881. Almost every surviving narrative of the change comes from the London Missionary Society or from the court itself, and both had reasons to describe a conversion in the terms they chose.

The square is still open ground, edged now by the Catholic cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a lycée and houses stepping down the slope.
