Dynastic History | Jongmyo Jeongjeon 종묘 정전 — The Shrine Was Rebuilt First, and the Palace Waited

The Joseon court moved its capital to Hanyang in 1394 and began the ancestral shrine late that year, finishing it in the ninth month of 1395 — the same season as the palace, and by the same reasoning. 종묘 held the spirit tablets of the dynasty's kings and queens. 종묘사직, "the shrine and the altars", was the ordinary word for the state itself, which is a way of saying the state was defined by its dead.

The shrine burned in 1592, in the first year of the Japanese invasions, along with most of the capital. The court's own annals, 《조선왕조실록》, record that the tablets were carried out ahead of the fire — the dynasty's account of its own escape, and the only detailed one. Rebuilding was finished in 1608, the year Gwanghaegun took the throne; some accounts date the start of the work to 1601. The reconstructed 정전 was returned to the eleven chambers it had held before the war.

It did not stay at eleven. When a king's tablet could not be moved out of the main hall, the court added bays to the east instead: four in 1726, four more in 1836, reaching the nineteen chambers standing today. Sixteen further kings and eighteen queens are housed separately in 영녕전. The hall is long because the court kept deciding, reign by reign, whose memory was permanent — an argument settled in timber rather than in writing. Two more tablets were installed in 1973 and 1991, after there was no longer a dynasty to install them.

Nothing about the building competes with what is inside it: one roofline, a colonnade, and a court of rough stone slabs. UNESCO listed the complex in 1995. The 종묘대제 is performed on the first Sunday in May; the rest of the year the gate sells timed tickets.
