Dynastic History|Temple of the Inscriptions, Palenque — The Staircase Under the Floor

On 15 June 1952, after months spent clearing rubble from a stairway packed shut in antiquity, a team under the archaeologist Alberto Ruz L'Huillier freed the triangular slab at its foot and stepped into a vaulted chamber inside the pyramid. INAH's own account of the work dates the entry to that day, and the raising of the sarcophagus lid — done with truck jacks and tree trunks braced against the stone — to 27 November of the same year. The sarcophagus is 3.80 metres long, 2.20 wide and 25 centimetres thick, hieroglyphs cut along its sides.

The pyramid was designed around that burial. K'inich Janaab' Pakal was interred here on 28 August 683 — the Long Count converted on the 584285 constant and given in the Julian calendar, the basis used by Stuart and by Martin and Grube; sources working from 584283 give dates a day or two later. His son K'inich Kan Bahlam II finished the temple above. Its three panels carry some 617 glyph blocks, among the longest Maya texts known, and they read as a legitimating document rather than a chronicle: the reign is fitted into a series of period endings, the predecessors are named, and the text closes by recording the ruler's death and his heir. The court commissioned the account of itself that survives.

Nothing in it counts the people who quarried and carried the limestone, or says on what terms they worked. That silence is standard across the corpus.

The chamber is not on the visitor route. INAH has installed monitoring for temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide inside it, and what most visitors see are the reproductions at the site museum and in Mexico City.
