Esports | Halo Infinite | OpTic Gaming — The 4-0 Bracket-Reset Sweep at The Arch

On October 23, 2022, OpTic Gaming and Cloud9 sat on the championship stage in Halls D–F of the Arch at Seattle Convention Center for the final match of the first Halo Championship Series season played in Halo Infinite. Publisher 343 Industries governed the official HCS program with Esports Engine as its global management partner; the World Championship moved 16 teams from pool play into a double-elimination bracket and used best-of-seven series for the Grand Final.

OpTic arrived from the winners’ side after sweeping every championship-bracket opponent 3–0, while Cloud9 had lost to Native Gaming Red and fought through the lower bracket. Double elimination therefore required Cloud9 to defeat OpTic in two separate best-of-seven series, and Cloud9 won the first 4–1 after dropping its opening map, erasing OpTic’s winners-bracket protection.

The reset left one best-of-seven for the title, and OpTic won it 4–0. This was four map wins, not one combined score: the games changed objectives between holding the Oddball for two winning rounds, reaching 50 kills in Slayer, controlling zones for Strongholds points, and capturing hills in King of the Hill.

Cloud9 forced the deciding Oddball round on the first reset map, but OpTic took it; the next Slayer was a “Steaktacular,” Halo’s label for winning by at least a 60-percent scoring margin. OpTic then won Strongholds 250–173 and closed King of the Hill 3–2 when time expired, producing the four-map sweep after nine maps across the two final series.

OpTic’s active four were Bradley “aPG” Laws, Matt “FormaL” Piper, Tommy “Lucid” Wilson, and Joey “Trippy” Taylor, coached by Jason “Lunchbox” Brown. Cloud9 fielded Kevin “Eco” Smith, Braedon “StelluR” Boettcher, Adam “Bound” Gray, and Zane “Pznguin” Hearon; the official results awarded OpTic first place and $400,000, with Cloud9 second at $220,000.

Competition used Halo Infinite’s Season 2: Lone Wolves client state before the October 25 PC crash patch, with HCS Handbook version 1.05 and its Ranked four-versus-four settings. The handbook permitted administration-provided player PCs or Xbox Series X consoles, but the public event record does not identify the grand-final station type or a private build number, so neither is inferred here.
